Thank you to Coach Bill Carufe, Director of Basketball Operations and physical education teacher, for sharing this story about a Seacrest community outreach partnership.
For six weeks during November and December 2018, Seacrest 8th grade students participated in a basketball program with students from the local Easter Seals program (images below). Each Friday for one hour, students with varying disabilities from the Easter Seals program visited the Seacrest Campus. The 8th grade students assumed a variety of roles such as players, coaches, scorekeepers, referees, music DJs, cheerleaders, and spectators. They formed teams each week and taught basketball skills with drills and then played a full court realistic game of hoops!
Teams were fully integrated so all students could experience a genuine game and the teamwork that goes along with it. Easter Seals students received "Sting City" t-shirts and medals for their participation in the program. It was a rewarding experience for all students and we look forward to future partnerships with the Easter Seals students.
