Lower School Robotics Team Named International
Semi-Finalist for FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award
The accolades keep coming for our incredible Lower School Robotics Team, the Blue Rays! The team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Seventh Annual FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award for creating a tent to protect honeybees from mosquito spraying. The Blue Rays beat nearly 30,000 other teams from 30 countries to become a top twenty semi-finalist. The team will travel to Washington, DC from June 18-20 to present their invention to expert judges.
All semi-finalists will participate in a two day, hands-on innovation event at the Kellogg Conference Center, which culminates in the awarding of the top prize of $20,000 to continue work on their inventions; two runners-up will take home $5,000 each.
Teams participating in FIRST® LEGO® League this year had to identify a problem between animal and human interaction and find a viable solution to that problem. The Blue Rays invented a tent that generates a soft mist to encourage honeybees to return to their hive before aerial spraying occurs for mosquitoes and other pests. Aerial spraying for mosquitoes has killed millions of honeybees in the United States this year. The Florida State Beekeepers' Association presented the Blue Rays invention to state legislators earlier this year. The tent is also in the early stages of being patented.
The FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award demonstrates that FIRST® LEGO® League teams emerge from the program as better visionaries, divergent thinkers, and actual inventors. The FIRST® LEGO® League Global Innovation teams are changing the world, one invention at a time.
So, What is The #SeacrestFeverTo500 Anyway?
We've been getting a lot of questions about our cheeky little hashtag that's been popping up all over social media and our website.
Lucky for us, Ryan Jobe, Director of Enrollment, is here to break down what the FEVER is all about!
