Lower School

Preschool–Grade 5

The Lower School years are a time of remarkable growth. At Seacrest, students begin building the confidence, curiosity, and character that shape a lifelong love of learning. In a joyful, student-centered environment, children are encouraged to explore new ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and embrace meaningful challenges each day.

Through strong foundations in literacy and mathematics, interdisciplinary learning, and hands-on experiences in spaces like our gardens and STEAM Lab, students develop the skills to think critically, communicate clearly, and approach learning with confidence.

Hands-On Learning

Hands-On Learning

Students explore ideas through inquiry, experimentation, and interdisciplinary learning experiences in the classroom, gardens, and STEAM Lab.

Curious. Empathetic. Resourceful.

A child’s natural curiosity is the beginning of meaningful learning. At Seacrest, we nurture that curiosity through purposeful exploration, thoughtful challenge, and hands-on discovery.

Our Lower School classrooms are dynamic, student-centered environments where students build strong foundations in literacy, mathematics, communication, and problem-solving. Small class sizes allow teachers to truly know each child and guide their growth as learners and individuals.

Alongside academic development, students cultivate empathy, collaboration, and resilience—skills that help them thrive both in the classroom and in the wider world.

Lower School students:

  • Build strong foundations in reading, writing, speaking, and mathematics
  • Explore ideas through hands-on learning in the classroom, gardens, and STEAM Lab
  • Develop confidence through presentation, collaboration, and creative expression
  • Practice empathy, responsibility, and respect as members of a caring community
  • Experience learning beyond the classroom through field studies and experiential opportunities
  • Grow as curious thinkers, engaged learners, and emerging leaders

"In Lower School, we want students to be known, encouraged, and inspired. We want them to develop a love of learning, strong academic foundations, and the confidence to ask questions, solve problems, and grow through new experiences. Just as importantly, we want them to become kind, thoughtful members of a community—students who understand themselves, value others, and approach the world with curiosity and compassion."

— Tyra Turner, Co-Head of School/Head of Lower Division

The World is our Classroom

Learning at Seacrest extends beyond the walls of the classroom. Outdoor learning spaces, field studies, and hands-on experiences connect academic concepts to real-world discovery. These moments deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and nurture the joy of learning that stays with students for life.

Hallmarks of the Lower School Experience

Integrative Academics

Students experience learning that connects literacy, science, technology, and mathematics through inquiry, exploration, and hands-on discovery. This interdisciplinary approach encourages curiosity, deeper understanding, and the ability to make meaningful connections across subjects.

Mathematics

Students develop strong mathematical thinking through problem-based learning that builds number sense, reasoning, and confidence. Through exploration, discussion, and real-world application, they learn to analyze problems, explain their thinking, and approach mathematics with curiosity and perseverance.

Math Enrichment

Our Math Enrichment program provides additional challenge for students ready to go beyond the standard curriculum. Through small-group instruction, students engage in advanced problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and creative exploration of concepts. The program encourages deeper understanding, builds confidence, and strengthens analytical thinking.

Humanities

Visual art and music enrich the Lower School experience, inviting students to explore creativity, study influential artists and musicians, and express their ideas through performances, projects, and displays that celebrate imagination and artistic growth.

Spanish

Students begin learning Spanish through an immersive, conversational approach that builds communication skills, cultural awareness, and confidence. Early language exposure encourages curiosity about the world and strengthens cognitive flexibility as students learn to think and communicate in new ways.

Character & Service

Students cultivate empathy, responsibility, and integrity through daily classroom experiences, community service, and environmental stewardship. From meaningful projects to hands-on learning in our organic gardens, students discover the importance of caring for others and contributing to their community.

Thoughtful Technology Use

Students use technology as a tool for creativity, exploration, and problem-solving. Through coding, robotics, multimedia projects, and interactive tools, they build digital skills while learning to use technology thoughtfully, responsibly, and with purpose.

Rich Community Experience

Lower School students are part of a connected PK–12 community where relationships extend across grade levels. Through mentoring, shared traditions, and collaborative experiences, students build meaningful connections that foster belonging, leadership, and a strong sense of community.

Healthy Living

Students learn the importance of balanced, healthy lifestyles through physical activity, mindfulness, and wellness education. These experiences help children develop habits that support physical health, emotional well-being, and lifelong resilience.
