This experiment served as a culmination of their work to gain a deeper understanding of the scientific method while developing the ability to put the steps of the scientific method into practice. In this lab, the students were given four "mystery powder" substances and three indicator liquids. They researched the signs that a chemical reaction had occurred and were shown possible chemical reactions that might take place in this lab. After they had all of their background information each lab group came up with their own hypothesis for their lab. Each group was given access to an array of different materials from beakers to test tubes to pipets and watch glasses. The students had to plan out the materials needed and then create step-by-step instructions for how they were going to test each powder with each liquid to ascertain the identity of each mystery substance. The students put their plans into action and used their knowledge of the signs of chemical reactions to determine which powder was which. At the end of the lab, the students had to design their own lab report that had all the steps as well as their results. Each group had to review their own write up and state any potential sources of error and improvements they could make to their design. Students listed communication, team work, organization, and neatness of their work space as things that they could improve that would allow them to get better results in their lab. After this, the groups reflected on what they learned during this lab process. One group: Sofie A., Grace Q., Gaige H., and Vance L. stated, "In this lab we learned that the certain powders we used reacted to the liquids combined. We learned that communicating not only in group projects but in real life is very important." The last step of the scientific method is "sharing your results." The students wrote a lab manual for select Lower School classes to follow. These classes will come to the science lab to participate in a lab that was completely designed, tested, and written by their Middle School peers. The Lower School students are going to make sure that the Middle School students wrote clear, concise, and accurate information that will help the Lower School students solve the same mystery of "which powder is which?"
College Fair The first, and hopefully, annual Seacrest College Fair was a terrific success! Held today in the Upper School Common Room, admissions representatives from nearly 20 colleges and universities met with Upper School students and parents. Many of the colleges and universities are local to Florida, but some are from as far away as New York. It was a great first step for many Seacrest freshman and sophomores who had never had the chance to speak with an admissions representative before! THE SEACREST DOZEN Each week we ask a Seacrest staffer 12 questions + one more if we're feeling adventurous. #StingrayPride Mr. Ryan Jobe Director of Enrollment Management THE BASICS My favorite activity: any type of game - cards, golf, basketball, etc. FAST FACTS
